Jeddah is the second Saudi city Irish doctors typically consider, and it is a genuinely different move from Riyadh. Coastal, more relaxed, historically international because of the Red Sea and pilgrim traffic through nearby Makkah. Consultant pay runs SAR 60,000 to 70,000 on our current listings, tax free. Jeddah readers are almost always people who already thought about Riyadh, so the honest comparison is worth doing upfront. Riyadh has more consultant vacancies at any given moment, the government tertiary sector is larger, and Vision 2030 has channelled the biggest single healthcare investment programme into the capital. Jeddah has less volume but a genuinely different flavour: a coastal city with a long history of international residents, closer to the pilgrim economy, and generally described as more relaxed by families who have lived in both.
For an Irish consultant with young children, this often comes down to two questions. How much does daily social flexibility matter to you? Jeddah, coastal and historically cosmopolitan, has a slightly more informal atmosphere. And which employer type suits you? MNGHA and KFSH&RC have strong presence in both cities, so the choice may come down to the specific hospital and specialty. Consultant roles on our current Jeddah listings pay SAR 60,000 to 70,000 per month, roughly EUR 14,000 to EUR 16,500, tax free. Riyadh consultant listings sit in a similar range, so the pure headline pay between the two cities is close to a wash. Both sit below the AED 70,000 to 120,000 range you see for equivalent consultant roles in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
Package composition typically closes some of the gap versus the UAE. Saudi hospital groups usually add larger housing allowances, education allowances for international schooling, and repatriation flights structured differently to UAE contracts. Between Jeddah and Riyadh specifically, housing tends to run a shade cheaper in Jeddah on comparable neighbourhoods, so the take-home comparison can tilt marginally Jeddah's way for families in villa accommodation.

The Saudi Commission for Health Specialties is a single national regulator, so the licence is the same whether your target hospital is in Jeddah, Riyadh, or anywhere else in the Kingdom. Ireland is on the SCFHS list of recognised training countries, and Irish CCST holders qualify for Consultant classification if their experience meets SCFHS requirements. The process runs five stages: DataFlow document verification (four to eight weeks), professional classification, Prometric exam (with exemption available for many Irish CCST holders), Council registration, and Mumaris Plus portal activation. Total timeline for most Irish cases runs three to six months.

Saudi Arabia's national context applies in both cities. Saudi Arabia scored 73.1 on the 2024 Numbeo Safety Index, above the UK, US, and France, and was among the top five countries for solo walking on the 2021 Gallup safety poll. Since 2018, women can drive, mix freely with men in public, and travel independently. Weekends run Friday to Saturday. Ramadan hours shift working schedules across the whole month for Muslim and non-Muslim staff alike.
International school choice is narrower than Riyadh but the anchor schools (British International School Jeddah, American International School Jeddah, and long-established IB schools) all have strong reputations. Summer humidity is higher than Riyadh because of the Red Sea; the trade-off is winter that is genuinely mild.
Jeddah's Western expat neighbourhoods concentrate in five areas along and near the northern corniche, all within reasonable reach of the KFSH&RC and MNGHA campuses.
The traditional heart of expat Jeddah, established, walkable, close to the Corniche and near several embassies. Widest availability of furnished apartments and the strongest expat services base.
Corniche-facing seafront, premium apartments and hotels, popular with corporate expats and healthcare consultants who value the sea view. Among the more expensive areas.
Central-urban and quieter than Al Hamra, established residential streets, popular with families for the schools and supermarkets nearby.
North-central Jeddah, premium apartments and villas, similar profile to Al Hamra but a bit newer.
Waterfront in the north, resort-style villas and beach clubs, ideal for families whose weekend priority is the sea. Longer commute to central Jeddah hospitals but shorter to the newer campuses.

Most Irish candidates for Jeddah roles work with us by video for the initial consultation and licensing preparation, then travel for the hospital interview stage. Jeddah is roughly seven to eight hours from Dublin with one stop (typically Doha, Istanbul, or Dubai), and about two hours forty-five minutes direct from Dubai. King Abdulaziz International Airport is 20 to 30 minutes from most Jeddah hospitals depending on traffic.
