At the General Assembly of Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) in Paris in November 2023, Riyadh was announced as the host of the 2030 World Expo. Saudi Arabia’s successful bid received 119 votes from other member states. Riyadh will be the second Arab City to host the World Expo, after Dubai 2020.

World Expos, hosted in different cities every 5 years, are global platforms for presenting the latest scientific and technological advances, and promoting international cooperation in economic development, trade, arts and culture.

What is the theme for Expo 2030?

The theme for the World Expo 2030 in Riyadh is “The Era of Change: Together for a Foresighted Tomorrow.” Taking place from 1st October 2030 to 31st March 2031, the Expo will bring delegates from all over the globe to share ideas and solutions on how we can shape a prosperous and sustainable future for all. The World Expo coincides with a crucial year for the realisation of the goals and ambitions of Saudi Vision 2030.

Launched in 2016, Saudi Vision 2030 set out a roadmap for ongoing unprecedented transformation in the Kingdom. World Expo 2030 will reflect Saudi Arabia’s ambitious national vision and its diligent pursuit of economic and social growth and prosperity.

Why was Riyadh chosen to host the Expo?

Saudi Arabia has already gained recognition for hosting major international events, and promoting advancements in technology, creativity, and innovation. Saudi Arabia is a dynamic country, with a growing, ambitious and relatively young population. The country ranks in the top 20 economies of the world and number one in the Middle East. The country remains proud of its vibrant heritage and culture while embracing modernisation and investing in a sustainable future.

Saudi Arabia is developing some of the most transformational and innovative projects in the world, connecting heritage, biodiversity, innovation and community regeneration. New tourism and visa initiatives are opening up Saudi Arabia to visitors from around the world.

Hosting the Expo in Saudi Arabia’s capital city will further the Kingdom’s influential role in promoting communication between nations to enhance global cooperation for a better tomorrow.

What can we expect at Expo 2030?

Expo 2030 promises to be one of the largest gatherings in the world, involving hundreds of official participants, such as nations, international organisations, companies, NGOs, universities, entrepreneurs, artists, and innovators. The Expo site is being developed to the North of the city, in close proximity to King Khalid International Airport (KKIA). It will cover an area of 6 million square metres, with parks and green spaces, sports arenas, large-scale concert venues, and country pavilions. The design is inspired by the oasis or garden origin of Riyadh, and will embody the vision of the country to pioneer a sustainable future for cities and their communities. Throughout the six months, there will be a rich programme of

cultural, sporting and entertainment events. Riyadh will also feature the world’s first Expo Metaverse platform, opening up the Expo to a wider audience around the world. Saudi Arabia invites the world to an incredible journey at the Riyadh Expo 2030.
